Bio Energie Oberallgäu

Boiler output: 4,500 kWth (700 kWel)

Combustion system: hydraulic reciprocating step grate

Fuel: wood chips, bark

Year of construction: 2005

Location: Germany

Project description:

The biomass cogeneration plant in Sonthofen, a town with 25,000 residents, supplies environmentally friendly heat to numerous public, commercial and private buildings. Bioenergie Oberallgäu GmbH is the operator and investor. The plant’s rated thermal input is 4.9 MW. Flue gasses are cleared by a flue gas condensation system and a downstream electrostatic filter.

The turbine produces 700 kWel. With 8,000 operating hours per year, the generator is able to produce and feed into the power supplier’s grid almost 6 million kilowatthours of electricity.

The fuel requirement amounts to 10,000 t of unprocessed wood chips per year. These are supplied from the surrounding forests. The plant saves 2.3 million litres of fuel oil per year, avoiding the emission of approx. 6,500 t of carbon dioxide.
