Combustion system: hydraulic reciprocating step grate

Fuel: forest chips, sawmill residue

Year of construction: 2006

Location: Germany

Project description:

“In order to increase the added value and to compensate for the slacking sales of forestry products, 3 silviculture unions from Eastern Bavaria (Wegscheid, Passau and Freyuung-Grafenau) decided to invest in a biomass cogeneration plant.

The thermal oil boiler plant with an output of 4,850 kWth produces 680 kWel using an ORC module. The plant’s waste heat is used for the purpose of district heating. Accordingly, a 2 km long district heating pipeline runs through the whole industrial area from Jahrdorf to the city centre.

The fuel is stored in a 30×50 m hall with a storage capacity of 3,500 bulk m³ of wood chips. 90% of the time, pre-crushed material is purchased additionally. In total, 11,000 t are burnt in this plant per year.”
