Project description:

“The city of Baran is located several kilometres from Orscha. The main task of the cogeneration plant installed there by Polytechnik is to save natural gas. Instead of natural gas, 50% wood chips (the Orscha forestry operation is the main supplier) and 50% milled peat (main supplier from the Tolotschinskiy area) are used. During winter, 100 t of wood chips and 100 t of peat are burnt every day. This proportion may vary, as the plant is designed for 100% wood chips and 100% peat. The plant operates 8,000 hours per year.

The cogeneration plant uses a thermal oil boiler with 17,200 kWth output and a turbine generator with 3,250 kWel. Silicone oil and thermal oil are used as heat media in the turbine generator instead of steam. The plant can be operated within a range of 10-100% of its nominal output. The use of local fuels saves approx. 8.000.000 m3 of natural gas every year.

The plant is a great example for the autonomous heat supply of a city with 11,000 residents, whereby the whole heat is produced by the cogeneration plant.”
